Backgrounder: Scotiabank AIDS Walk for Life

Nationally: Founded in 1989, the Scotiabank AIDS Walk for Life is one of the largest AIDS fundraising events in Canada, raising over $8.5 million to date through the participation of more than 120,000 walkers, hundreds of corporate and community teams and many caring corporate supporters. The Walk brings together people from all ages and walks of life for a day filled with fun, festivities and hope.

In Toronto: The Scotiabank AIDS Walk for Life Toronto raises much-needed funds for the AIDS Committee of Toronto (ACT). Last year participants raised over $420,000 to support ACT’s vital programs and services. This year our goal is $500,000, which will help ACT continue to deliver its current programs and develop new ways to meet the needs of our diverse communities.

The Walk includes a community fair on Church Street and fabulous entertainment to create an enjoyable experience for all participants. The Walk distance is approximately 5 km and the route takes participants south on Church to Queen, west on Queen to Yonge, north on Yonge to Charles, east on Charles to Jarvis, south on Jarvis to Cawthra Square, through Cawthra Square Park past the AIDS Memorial to Church Street, and south on Church to Wood Street. We celebrate our accomplishments with entertainment and a beer garden at our after-Walk party.
