Toronto, July 5, 2011 – The Scotiabank AIDS Walk for Life Toronto will be held Sunday, September 25 to benefit the AIDS Committee of Toronto (ACT), a leader in the fight against HIV/AIDS right here at home.
“We acknowledge our community’s resilience over the last 30 years. Thanks in part to fundraising events like the Scotiabank AIDS Walk for Life Toronto, our community remains strong,” says Jim Stone, Co-Chair of the Scotiabank AIDS Walk for Life Toronto. “With more people than ever before living with HIV in Toronto, the need for awareness and funds raised at the Walk has never been greater.”
FACTS ABOUT HIV/AIDS IN TORONTO:
- Over 20,000 people have tested positive for HIV since 1985 in Toronto.
- Two people are infected with HIV (the AIDS virus) every day in our city.
- Preventing one HIV infection saves $370,000 in direct costs over a lifetime.
Prevention, care and support for those affected and infected with HIV/AIDS remains a top priority. Founded in 1983, ACT provides information and support to people living with and affected by HIV/AIDS, while also working to prevent HIV transmission through outreach and education. ACT delivers a wide range of programs that promote health and well being, from support services to targeted education campaigns in communities affected by HIV/AIDS.
Last year, the Scotiabank AIDS Walk for Life Toronto raised over $420,000 to support ACT’s vital programs and services. This year our goal is $500,000, which will help ACT continue to deliver its current programs and develop new ways to meet the needs of our diverse communities. We also aim to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS issues.
